Suspected robber holes up in car, dies after shooting himself

KAWAGOE, Japan - Police officers swarm a Honda sedan in Kawagoe, Saitama Prefecture, on June 3 in which a man armed with a gun had holed up for eight hours. The man later shot himself in the head and died in hospital, police said. The police suspect that the man may have been involved in a robbery at a pachinko parlor in the city of Konosu around midnight the previous day.

Bird flu detected at Saitama Pref. chicken farm

SAITAMA, Japan - Photo taken on Aug. 18 shows a farm in Konosu, Saitama Prefecture, where chickens have tested positive for bird flu virus. Prefectural government said the virus detected is of the H5 variety but is considered to be of a weaker type because no mass deaths have occurred at the farm.
